Additional Deadly Viruses We Ever Knew

by Dhani Anggara, MD

In the last of 2 months our world seriously discusses about Coronavirus infection, here are some of the other viruses that could have been deadly and had a big problem for human civilization history.

1. Marburg: The most dangerous virus is the Marburg virus. The city is named after the small and beautiful city on the river Lahn - but it has nothing to do with the disease itself. The Marburg virus is a dengue virus. Like Ebola, the Marburg virus causes convulsions and bleeding in the mucous membranes, skin and organs. He has a 90 percent mortality rate.

2. Ebola: There are five types of Ebola viruses, each named after a country and region in Africa: Zaire, Sudan, the Tai Forest, Bundibugyo and Reston. Zaire Ebola virus is the most deadly, with a mortality rate of 90 percent. This is the tension that is currently spreading through Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, and so on. Scientists say the flying fox might bring the Zaire Ebola virus to cities.

3. Hantavirus: Hantavirus describes several types of viruses. Its name was taken from the river where the American army was first suspected of being infected with Hantavirus, during the Korean War in 1950. Symptoms include lung disease, fever, and kidney failure.

4. H5N1: Various types of bird flu regularly cause panic - which may be justified because of the 70 percent mortality rate. But the actual risk of contracting the H5N1 virus - one of the best known - is quite low. You can only be infected through direct contact with poultry. This said explains why the majority of cases arise in Asia, where people often live close by

5. Lassa: A nurse in Nigeria was the first person to be infected with the Lassa virus. The virus is transmitted by mice. Cases can be endemic - meaning the virus occurs in certain regions, such as in West Africa, and can reappear there at any time. Scientists assume that 15 percent of mice in west Africa carry the virus.

6. Junin: The Junin virus is associated with Argentinian hemorrhagic fever. People infected with this virus suffer from tissue inflammation, sepsis, and skin bleeding. The problem is that the symptoms appear so common that this disease is rarely detected or identified in the first sample.

7. Crimea-Congo: The Crimea-Congo fever virus is transmitted by fleas. This is similar to the Ebola and Marburg viruses in their development. During the first days of infection, sufferers experience pin-sized bleeding on the face, mouth, and pharynx.

8. Machupo: The Machupo virus is associated with Bolivian dengue, also known as black typhus. The infection causes high fever, accompanied by heavy bleeding. It develops similar to the Junin virus. Viruses can be transmitted from human to human, and mice often carry them.

9. Kyasanur Forest Virus: Scientists discovered the Kyasanur Forest Virus (KFD) in forests on the southwest coast of India in 1955. The virus is transmitted through fleas, but scientists say it is difficult to determine any carrier. It is assumed that rats, birds and boars can be hosts. People infected with this virus suffer from high fever, strong headaches, and muscle aches that can cause bleeding.

10. Dengue: Dengue fever is a constant threat. If you are planning a vacation in the tropics, get information about dengue fever. Transmitted by mosquitoes, dengue fever strikes between 50 and 100 million people per year in popular holiday destinations such as Thailand and India. But that's more than a problem for the 2 billion people who live in areas threatened by dengue fever.

11. HIV: Since it was first recognized in the 1980s, more than 35 million people have died due to being infected with this virus. HIV attacks the immune system, and weakens the defense against infection and certain types of cancer.
